2013 Golden Kite Award Winning Children's Books

On March 1, 2013, the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators presented the winners of the 2013 Golden Kite Awards.  These awards are given annually to writers and illustrators of children's books published in the previous year in the categories of Fiction, Non-Fiction, Picture Book Text, and Picture Book Illustrations.  The four 2013 winners are:

The Five Lives of Our Cat Zook, written by Joanne Rocklin
Noah Webster and His Words, written by Jeri Chase Ferris
Me and Momma and Big John, written by Mara Rockliff and illustrated by William Low
Lester's Dreadful Sweaters, written and illustrated by KG Campbell

2013 ALA Childrens Book Award Announcements

On January 28, 2013 at the American Library Association’s Midwinter Meeting in Seattle, Washington, the ALA announced the winners of the 2013 John Newbery Medal, the 2013 Randolph Caldecott Medal, the 2013 Theodor Seuss Geisel Award, the 2013 Coretta Scott King Book Awards, The 2013 Laura Ingalls Wilder Author Medal, the 2013 Pura Belpre Awards, the 2013 Mildred L. Batchelder Award,
The 2013 Newbery Medal winner is “The One and Only Ivan” written by Katherine Applegate and illustrated by Patricia Castelao

The 2013 Caldecott Medal winner is “This is Not My Hat” Illustrated and Written by Jon Klassen.  This is the 75th anniversary of the Caldecott Medal.

The 2013 Theodor Seuss Geisel Award winner is “Up, Tall, and High!”  Written and Illustrated by Ethan Long

The 2013 Coretta Scott Author Winner is “Hand in Hand: Ten Black Men Who Changed America” written by Andrea Davis Pinkney, Illustrated by Brian Pinkney
The 2013 Coretta Scott King Illustrator Winner is “I, Too, Am America”  Illustrated by Bryan Collier and Written by Langston Hughes

The 2013 Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal Winner is author Catherine Patterson, her first book was published in 1937, 40 years ago.
The 2013 Pura Belpre Award for Illustration winner is “Martin de Portes: The Rose in the Desert” Illustrated by David Diaz, written by Gary D. Schmidt

The 2013 Pura Belpre Award for Text Winner is “Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe” Written by Benjamin Alire Saenz
The Mildred L. Batchelder Award Winner is “My Family for the War” Translated by Tammi Reichel and Written by Anne C. Voorhoeve was originally published in Germany.

2012 Orbis Pictus Children's Book Award

On January 20th, 2012, the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) announced the 2012 winner and honors books of the Orbis Pictus Children's Book Award. The award is given to outstanding non-fiction books for children.  Orbis Pictus was the name of a book published in 1657 by Johannes Amos Comenius.  Orbis Pictus - The World in Pictures is considered to be one of the first books for children.

The 2012 Orbis Pictus winner is Balloon Over Broadway: The True Story of the Puppeteer of Macy's Parade by Melissa Sweet.

There were five honors books:
Amelia Lost: The Life and Disappearance of Amelia Earhart by Candace Fleming
Father Abraham: Lincoln and His Sons by Harold Holzer
Pablo Neruda: Poet of the People by Monica Brown, illulstrated by Julie Paschkis
Terezin: Voices from the Holocaust by Ruth Thomson
The Mangrove Tree: Planting Trees to Feed Families by Susan L. Roth and Cindy Trumbore

2012 Mildred Batchelder Award

This is the final post in the series covering the 2012 children's award winning books handed out by the Association for Library Service to Children, which is a division of the American Library Association.  The first three posts featured the 2012 Newbery Medal, the 2012 Caldecott Medal, and the 2012 Theodor Seuss Geisel Award.

The Mildred Batchelder Award is given to a foreign children's book that was translated and published in English during the previous year.  Mildred Batchelder served as an ambassador to children's books by making sure good books all over the world were accessible in many different languages.

This year's 2012 Batchelder Award winner is Soldier Bear written by Dutch author Bibi Dumon Tak, illustrated by Philip Hopman, translated by Laura Watkinson. 

There was only one 2012 Batchelder Honors book and that was The Lily Pond written by Swedish author Annika Thor, and translated by Linda Schenck.
